Please help Little Bells

12e253dMy name is Leela, and I am the younger sister of Daniel Jesudason, and family friend of Munidasa Winslow; co-founders of Little Bells Promise Land in Nepal.

Together with my brother and family, I visited the site of Little Bells Promise Land at the Australian Base Camp, about two hours’ drive from Pokhara, where we met with the team of big-hearted Nepalese men and women who are committed to help construct and staff a home for Nepalese orphans. This is to ensure the children get the education they need to break the cycle of poverty that plagues the rural communities of Nepal.

Unlike the many orphanages in various Nepali cities, Little Bells Promise Land is located up in the remote mountainous region of Dhampus, offering shelter, food and education to children who cannot make the long daily three-hour hikes down to the nearest village for basic education. Often, many of these displaced children are left without families due to Maoist activities in the area. Without schools to attend, they are often compelled to work to help supplement incomes of the families into which they are taken. Many can’t even read or write, and have only a basic rudimentary understanding of numbers.

The work is hard – relentless, back-breaking jobs from sunrise to sunset – often sitting on top of a pile of stones, breaking them into smaller pebbles. Exposed to harsh weather conditions, children as young as six years of age are left on their own to work hard and bring home perhaps a few cents a day. Older children take care of livestock, roaming through the rugged terrain with a few goats, obliged to stay out with the livestock no matter what the weather condition is. These small communities grow some of their own produce, and supplement their income by pooling their resources to build humble huts to offer accommodation to passing trekkers.

Despite the difficult lives they lead, they help each other whichever ways they can, and do their best to ensure the children are safe and healthy. Despite the leeches (!), my time in that community was bittersweet – I revelled in their simplicity love for one another, and yet despaired at the cycle of poverty that seems almost inescapable. Seeing the construction site of the orphanage, and the looks of hope and anticipation amongst the community, was a liberating and enriching experience for me; reinforcing my desire to help however I can – whether through financial contributions or by communicating their story whenever I can…

It is heartbreaking now, to hear of the devastating earthquake that has brought ruin and much heartbreak to these already poor communities. We are struggling to maintain contact with the families that have pledged their hearts and resources to Little Bells Promise Land. We pray they are all safe, and that the building – still halfway in the construction process – isn’t damaged. We know that getting back on their feet and rebuilding their lives will be an amazing challenge. Please join me and my family in helping them during this difficult time. While I wish I could jump on a plane and bring crates of food, clothing and medical supplies with me, I know that I would be limited in what I can achieve. We are now raising funds for the communities there to get food and water, and eventually rebuild their homes, and reach out to others who may have lost even more than just homes and livelihoods.

Every little bit helps. Please go to www.little-bells.com for more details on how you can give generously. We will continue to update with information and images as soon as we get them.

  5. thanks for your comments, appreciate the encouragement and information. Have a good day!

Sorry that we have taken awhile to respond to your comment, mainly because the site designer has not been able to continue and the rest of us have only recently been able to get access and are learning to manage the website. Most of us have been active at visiting Littlebells. If there are ways you can help please let us know. We are making our next trip to the project site from 4 – 10 January 2017. We are presently getting the constitution approved as we setup the Management Board as a charity foundation under Nepali law. The board members will be Nepali. At the same time we are bringing in the children, we have five (they are orphans from the social unrest due to Maoist activities and also because of family situations), there are children who are helpless due to the earthquake as well who we will be profiling and recruiting for the program and life at Littlbells. You are welcome to contact us through email littlebells.social@gmail.com. Thank you for your care and concern for children and for recognizing the plight of those who care victims of human trafficking.
